There is no need to fear drought here this year. With the late spring snowstorms and now the constant downpour of rain, we are more than a bit soggy. Last Thursday was no different. With a wall of water and 100km/hour winds, I had a small idea of what a hurricane felt like, even in my land locked province.
I ran to my car trying to avoid as much water as I could. By this time my umbrella had turned completely inside out and I was getting a little more than wet. I finally got into my dripping car, shook myself off, plugged in my ipod and ceremoniously chanted, as always, ‘Now’s the right time for a good song’. I let the rear windshield wiper go back and forth a few times, and then slowly backed my way out of my angled parking spot. When suddenly my car stopped moving.
I looked again behind me and found a car centered through my back window. Without a sound or a crash, I had gotten my new car into an accident. GRAB. I got out of my car to acess the damage. My new friend had a small dent on the passenger’s side of his all metal car, meanwhile I have a pretty large dent and a hole in my bumper.
Luckily, I guess, neither of us were moving faster than a parade, and so the damage was minimal. My friend and I stood out in the pouring rain, exchanging information, both laughing that we had never gotten into an accident and didn’t know what information we needed to exchange.
Hmmm…I guess this is why we have insurance, but it still makes me sad to look at my now broken car. If only I could take back those seconds!
My only hope is that something good comes of this. Maybe my new friend and I will fall in love. (He seemed about the right age.) Don’t tell me that wouldn’t make an awesome story. Besides, Jenny did remind me that our friend’s car was wrecked by her now husband, shortly before they started going out.
Everything will be just fine, and before long you won’t even remember that my back bumper wasn’t original to the car.
Good luck to all of us this week. We are going to need it.
