I’m Carried Away

If we hadn’t gotten home so late, I would have written all of this for you yesterday, that is how exciting last night was.

After a frustrating workday, I came home and tarted myself up for the FHE hoping to get a bit of fun in before going to our Peter Katz concert.

We went to a member of the Bishopric’s house who excitedly had a Karaoke machine. One of the Chinese restaurants in town use to have a Karaoke night, and Jenny and I would wrangle up all of our friends to sing the night away. I wished Jenny was there, but my FHE family entertained me with all kinds of music, from country to rap. We spent most of the night laughing more than singing. I even entertained the group by channeling my inner Britney Spears and singing Baby One More Time, and then quietly snuck out to hit up Peter Katz.

Okay. Seriously. I have mentioned Peter Katz a couple of times and you seriously don’t know who he is? Go, right now and check out his website. Right here. I will wait.

Really. Don’t read anymore until you have listened this, or this.

Fantastic, isn’t he? To be honest, he is even better live.

Okay, so the story of Peter Katz is as follows. Eric and his friend Garth had a radio show at the university before they went on their missions. A certain percentage of their show had to be new music, and a certain portion had to be Canadian music. So when they found a new Canadian artist, Peter Katz, they realized they could kill two birds with one stone.

It turns out that Peter Katz is amazing, and soon his whole album got tons of play on the goofy radio show. Somehow Peter found out that his album was being played here in town, and on his next cross country tour, arranged a stop in Lethbridge. Eric and Garth went to his concert, loved him even more live, and started promoting him to all of their friends. By the time he came back in April, me and my friends had joined the Peter Katz band wagon.

We knew Peter Katz would be sad to come to town and not meet up with his favourite radio guys, so we once again rounded up the troops and headed to see Peter Katz.

We sat at the front table, sang along with all of his songs and really enjoyed the concert. After the set, we went to thank Peter for a great concert, and say hi from Eric and Garth. And that is when we became Peter Katz new best friend complete with pictures, autographs and hugs. Peter, so excited to be surrounded by real fans, played another whole set of requested songs. It was close to midnight by the time we went to wish Peter good luck with the rest of his tour and safe drive home to Toronto.

I felt bad that we all had to work today because seriously I know all of us could have talked to Peter all night. He is so personable, gracious and his love of music is more than apparent. If you haven’t listened to him yet, what are you waiting for?

Finding it hard to concentrate on any amount of real work. Waiting to talk to you again. Wishing Peter Katz all the best.

My Duty To God And The Queen

I think had I started this post last night or even earlier this morning, it would have been a lot happier. When I drove to work this morning, my ever efficient iPod had 514 songs on it. Modest by all standards, but still a happy mix of all of my favourite songs.

Strangely when I plugged my iPod into my computer at work, it only had 447 song on it. But it wasn’t until I unplugged it that it now only has 219 songs on it.

Where are they all going?! I am beyond nervous to monkey with it anymore for fear of losing all my music. But what makes me most sad is that fact that I lost all of my playlists, including my current yearly cd. I get can the music back, or at least enough of it. But what is your damage? Stop breaking!

I am trying to keep my priorities in check. It is only music and I’ll get it figured out. But I am still sad.

Alright. Let’s move on with happier stories. If all Preferences went as well as Friday night did, I would have never retired. Yes. It was that good.

We went to our ward’s Pre-Preference Party and had a good time hanging out with my favourite ward. The dinner was amazing, the company full of fun and the pictures that were taken hopefully came out great.

We went back to my house to kill some time before going to the dance, but had such a good time there, that we only made it for the last fifteen minutes of the dance.

The dance always seems to be the worst part of the night. I am really not into dances, and if it were up to me, I would have just skipped it all together. Turns out he isn’t into dances either, and had I suggested that we not show up, he wouldn’t have been heartbroken.

We spent most of the night talking like chatterboxes, sharing all of our favourite stories and if you would have seen us, you would have never guessed that we have only been having real face to face conversations for a little over a month.

I couldn’t have asked for an easier night, or a better comeback. Thanks to everyone involved for making Preference 2008 such a success.

The rest of the weekend went by much too quickly and now we are all facing another long week of chaos. I am hoping to use my American citizenship to wrangle Thursday and Friday off of work. Sadly I don’t think it will work.

Peter Katz, tonight! Letters from Elder Garner! Grey Cup champs, the Calgary Stampeders!

Crossing my fingers, but not holding my breath.

Casual Plus

To say it has been an interesting week would be an understatement. The winds of change seem to be blowing in every direction these days, and not just forcing more realistic November temperatures. Normally not one to be excited by uncertainty, I seem to have remained relatively optimistic. This could be just what we all needed.

“You may have been subject to some emotional disappointments lately, but the day ahead will restore your faith in love. All you need to do is take action, dear Gemini.”

Keep your fingers crossed for positive updates on Monday.

Better Than Expected

I learned an important truth last night. Guys are different than girls.

Disclaimer: I knew driving home last night that I would want to make somewhat of a commentary on the differences between men and women, but ultimate knew that my male readership would be offended. But then again, since the guys are in such the minority, I thought I would post my finding anyways. Besides, I am sure you are different from these guys, so don’t take it personally.

I don’t know if girls are better hosts, if they like entertaining more than guys do, or if we just host people so often that it has just become second nature.

Let’s imagine a girl has invited a guy over to her house to watch a movie, or over for dinner. If this was a premeditated idea, you know that everything from her outfit to the food will have been thoroughly thought out.

But if this was a somewhat impromptu invitation, the house would quickly be tidied up (just don’t look in our closets, under our bed or behind the couch.) some sort of food would be wrangled up and with just one look, roommates would immediately scatter.

We would apologize immensely for our untidiness, feel bad that all we had to offer was a few cookies and hope, with fingers crossed, you were having a good time.

Please note my guy hosting abilities are based on a few invitations that have been extended to me in the last little while and not a reflection of any one person.

Chances are when you show up at the house, his roommates have no idea you are coming over, and usually hang out the rest of the night to see if anything fun might be happening. The roommates will usually entertain you with tales of guns and old sports injuries or if you are lucky, you tube videos of monster trucks.

Efforts have been made to improve the general cleanliness of the house, proofed only by the vacuum still being in the middle of the room, but you will still have to move dirty dishes off the couch to sit down, and please, try not to venture into the bathroom.

Food might be an issue as usually there aren’t any clean dishes. You might be offered some scary looking Kraft Dinner that probably has been sitting all night on the stove. Of course, due to all the dirty dishes, chances are you will have to eat it right out of the pot.

If he wants you to come and watch the game, that is exactly what we will do. All conversation will stop, and extreme focus will be applied to the game. Any conversation that is made will be strictly pointing out great plays, or statistical information about the team.

Any movie we watch will be from his extensive collection of Terminator, James Bond, Die Hard or Rambo. He will be really into the explosions and will undoubtedly replay some of them frame by frame so you can get the full effect.

And just when you think that the whole evening was a waste, and you are convinced this boy barely even noticed you were at his house, is when he offers to walk you to your car just to tell you how beautiful he thinks you look, or offers you the last piece of a crudely made chocolate cake, surprisingly on a clean plate.

So guys might not be the same kind of hosts as girls are, and maybe that is okay. They tried, and really, that is all that matters. Looking forward to similar invitations, hopefully in the near future.

Grateful for all I have.
Go Flames Go.

The Results Are In

Thank you to all of you who expressed opinions and voted for who I should take to Preference. Usually there is only one option as to who to take and the decision is pretty easy, but this year, I spent the last couple of weeks debating between the three. One week set on taking The Brother, the next The New RM. But I surprised even myself when I ended up asking The Internet Boyfriend, who in my poll only got one sad sympathy vote. (Who said the underdog can win?)

Yes, I did ask him via Facebook, but come on, would you expect anything less from our technological romance? Surprisingly he said he would go with me, and just like that, with only a week to spare, I have myself a date to Preference.

Our ward, in an effort to make Preference as stress free as possible, is hosting a Pre-Preference Party. And with an already premeditated outfit, all of the hard work of Preference is behind me. Some comeback, eh?

The weekend, like always, went by much too quickly. I again didn’t accomplish anything on my to do list, and in reality ended up making a bigger mess than I cleaned up.

I am bracing myself for another busy week, both personally and professionally. Our work week has only just begun and everyone seems to be pretty high strung and stressed out. Just trying to fly under the radar to avoid any major fallout.

Grateful for all that I have.
Thinking it has been too long since that kind of excitement
Wondering what to do with you, if anything.
Hoping for the best.
Waiting for the crash and burn.

Please, God Speed.

Off The Cuff

Oh my. It has been a busy day. But thankfully you can now see my actual desk. Most of the morning it was buried in papers and notes. Remember, I’m more than just pretty, I’m efficient too.

So here is the exciting news of the week. The other day I received a letter from Air Miles telling me how many air miles I had earned in the past year and all of the various things I could trade my miles in for. Later that night I decided to go on the website and find something to trade my pitiful amount of miles in for. I settled on a few gift certificates (Thanks for the free clothes, Air Miles) and still had a couple hundred points left in my account.

I scrolled through the pages of lame electric can opener type items, until on the very last page I found just the thing that has been missing from my life! A Magic Bullet!

Of all the things I need in my life, I have realized that the ability to make homemade salsa and guacamole in three seconds was at the top of that list.

I am not sure if you have seen the infomercial of this product, but it sucks me in EVERY time. It was on just the other night, and for probably the hundredth time, I had to watch it in its entirety.

So in about four weeks, Jenny and I will be proud owners of a Magic Bullet. And it was 100% free of charge! Thanks Air Miles.

I have heard mixed reviews as to how well the product actually works, but who cares, now Jenny and I can do our own infomercial re-enactments. I only wish Eric was here to experience the fun.

Please don’t forget to vote for who I should take to Preference, even though I may have already, kinda asked someone, via Facebook nonetheless. How gauche is that?

I figured that if I have already spent years of my life trying to come up with elaborate asking methods, so why not, in this my comeback year, try a more low key approach. If this actually works, I will be surprised.

Embracing the three day work week.
Relieved you aren’t dead.
Waiting to see what kind of hilarity ensues this weekend.

Scattered Thoughts

Hey! They made a movie about me. Sort of. I was looking in the TV Guide at all of the upcoming movies and found this gem, 'Life on Liberty Street'.

Here is the synopsis:

"Denise Garner, a single divorced mother and dedicated ER nurse takes on a new position at Liberty Street, a hospital for patients suffering severe brain trauma. She adjusts to the slower pace, but her career becomes complicated by the discovery that troubling secrets are locked away in the mind of her favorite patient."

So if you are lucky enough to get the Hallmark Channel, check it out for all of us. Come on, it is starring Ed Begley Jr! How could it be bad?

I may be a little too relaxed today to do any amount of serious work. I just got back from my four-day weekend. How is that even possible, you might wonder? Let me explain.

Yesterday, November 11, was Remembrance Day. One of only a handful of set day holidays we have in Canada. This year it happened to fall on a Tuesday. My office, deciding it would be too difficult to do work on Monday and then have Tuesday off, decided to close the office on Monday, and as a result we all got an extra long, long weekend.

So what have I been doing on all of my days off? Not much. I read, er, listened to A Tale of Two Cities, our most recent Book Club selection. (Why didn’t I think of Audio Books earlier?), we hosted a surprise Birthday Brunch for Amy, which went off much better than I thought it ever could! Thanks to everyone for their secret keeping! We went shopping, went for dinner, flirted, talked about Preference, realized Jenny and I would be awesome at Rock Band, cleaned the house (twice), watched a lot of horrible TV and ate too much licorice. All in all not a bad weekend.

Thankfully, our next weekend is only a short three days away! Why can every week be this quick?

So, of course with the advent of November comes the constant chatter of Preference. I seriously retired last year. Seriously. Read my heartfelt speech here. However, somehow I think I have gotten roped into going again this year.

I have three viable options this year. All of them would be a good enough date for the evening and I am at the same level of comfort with all of them. So now the problem comes in actually choosing one of them.

Of course, everyone has a different opinion as to who I should take. So now it is your turn to give your opinion.

Grateful for all that I have. If Preference is my biggest stress, I can sort that out.

It’s Only A Matter Of Time

I love my MTV. I know I am about 25 year late in saying that. Now, MTV is really not that awesome, or as cutting edge as it once was, but given the choice between CBC and MTV, I know what I would pick. (I’m sorry CBC. I still love you Peter Mansbridge, George, Jono and Mr. Dressup.)

The other night I found a new show on MTV called, Date My Playlist. (I seriously need to stop watching TV. Take up reading or something.) The guy or girl had to pick people to date just based on their musical tastes.

Most people had music on their playlist that I would never listen to. But I was intrigued with finding someone with the same love of music.

So I have made up my own playlist for you all. (If you know of any single guys, see if they will date me based on my music selections.) I originally had 17 songs on my playlist, but narrowed it down to just my seven favourites. Hope you enjoy!

Short Skirt, Long Jacket—Cake
(A guy once told me I was the girl they were talking about in the song, and I have loved it ever since. I like to think it is true.)

Come and Get It--The Beatles
(“Wait a minute, I am sure I have heard this song before, but I didn’t think it was The Beatles.” I am sure you are saying to yourself. And you are right. This is really a Badfinger song (Although still written by The Beatles).

Listen to the Badfinger version and you will realize The Beatles sing it so much beter.)

To Be Surprised--Sondre Lerche
(I tried to find a better video for this song, but sadly it doesn’t exist. I was waiting to be surprised, but nothing happens in the video. You have my permission to minimize it and play a game or figure out what you want to get me for Christmas while you are taking a listen.)

These Are The Days--Peter Katz
(Thanks to Eric for introducing us to Peter Katz, both musically as well as personally. He is playing a here in town on November 24. An event not to be missed.)

Not Ready To Go--The Trews
(The more I listen to The Trews, the more I love them. Sadly, most of you missed a fantastic concert.)

Work--Jimmy Eat World
(Oh, good old Jimmy. I found it difficult to choose a song to put on the list, I love all of them so much. But I really like this video.)

The One You Want--The Get Up Kids
(If people really could just choose someone to love solely based on their musical tastes, I would have been married long ago. A friend and I have the EXACT same musical love and he introduced me to The Get Up Kids. I have been hooked ever since.)

Just short 13 more hours (yes, I am counting) until a peaceful, relaxing weekend. Hopefully, fingers crossed, an extra, extra long weekend.

Looking forward to The Book Club. (Even though I didn’t read anything this week. Whoops!)

Thankful for everything I have but heaven knows I don’t deserve.

Stays The Same

Well, I really have enough stories and news for two posts. I really should have written all about my Halloween hijinks yesterday, but I didn’t so today is really long. I don’t know if that is cause for cheers or jeers.

To say that Friday was a busy day would be a huge understatement. I raced home from work to transform into Miss Victoria Park and head to the church for our Dinner in a Pumpkin Ward Party. We had a pretty good turn out and even 90% of the people dressed up. We played a reformed Halloween version of Mafia. For reasons unknown, everyone loves that game. I am convinced that if you went to Hell, that is the game you would be forced to play all day, everyday.

After the game, Jenny and I got invited to a haunted house (I only wish it was spook alley.) in a small Lakepoint-eque town only twenty minutes outside of the city. The huge house was filled top to bottom with Halloween vignettes (thanks to my mom for the word suggestion.) similar to the Haunted House at Lagoon. One room was decorated like a dungeon, the next like a mad scientist’s lab, over all not that frightening. But the scary part was the fact that people came out of dark corners to chase you or grab you. The suspense was the worst part. We screamed and held on tight to each other, but still had a fantastic time. We all can’t wait to go again next year!

I will tell you this, if you are looking for a get rich quick scheme, open a haunted house. They charged us $10.00 each!

We went to the end of the Halloween Dance and rounded out the night watching Hocus Pocus at Amy and Nicole’s.

Saturday came far too early as we headed to Calgary to see the last regular season Stampeders CFL game, and visit The Tawny Dog. We are experiencing above seasonal temperatures and I was grateful to go to an early November football game in just a sweater and not bundled up in a parka. Who said global warming was a bad thing?

Last night we had a special FHE Speed Dating night with our sister ward, London Road. Nothing has ever come from the previous times that I have participated in similar activities, but I did find it a quick and easy way to get to know a lot of people in one night.

Sure, talking to some people was like pulling teeth, but for the most part, people seemed half interesting. Of course most of the guys we super excited when I told them I had been to a football game on Saturday, so thanks to my parents for giving me an in.

You will never believe it, but right now, I am beyond optimistic about the future and feel just fine with all the situations that surround me. I have a few Preference ideas, fun friends that I am beginning to think I see too many times in a week, a roommate that is just as funny, if not more than I am, a clean house and strangely even a few extra dollars in the bank.

Feeling more than blessed.
Grateful for all I have.
Wishing the same for you.

As Always,
