Well, today is somewhat of an intellectual post. Shocking!
For those of us born between the years of 1977-1997, we are the lucky “Generation Y” (Why? Because we can.)
I personally think the name is dumb. Just because we follow Generation X doesn’t mean we have to follow with the whole letters thing. Does this mean my kids will be part of Generation Z? And then after that, then what? Back to Generation A?
Generation naming people have been trying to come up with other things to call us for years. (Apparently they weren’t so sold on the whole letter thing either) and here are my favourites that they have come up with so far:
The Net Generation
Millennials
Google Generation
MySpace Generation
Nintendo Generation
Generation 9/11
The Cynical Generation.
The Greatest Generation
But I have to say that my all time favourite title for us, is Generation Me. An article I read earlier this week talked about how we are somewhat of a selfish generation. Sure, we care about other people, but really only if it affects us. The article went on to talk about how we really are egomanicacts, and there is nothing that we love more than our own ideas, thoughts, words, music and friends.
Researchers have pin pointed our love of our selfs to a big push in the early 1990s for self esteem. Teaching all of us Generation Me, that, we are awesome and that everything thing we do, say or think is the best.
As my mom said to me the other day when I told her about this article, “Yes, heaven forbid we tell you that you do anything wrong.” (I think my self esteem went down a bit when she said that)
Maybe it is true.
Do we really only blogging because we think we are so funny, and love reading what we wrote?
Is Facebook ruining our lives because we are deperate to acquire more and more friends?
Are we constantly having arguments over who has the better musical taste?
Is there anything wrong with owning a mirror that says ‘I Love Me’?
But, in our defence, maybe we really are “The Greatest Generation”. Maybe we are the funniest, and have way more friends than our parents ever did have, our musical taste is broad and electic, and maybe a small dose of high self esteem never hurt anyone. Maybe, just maybe, people of the Baby Boomer Generation and Generation X are jealous because they know they could really never be as awesome as we are.
I really must be part of the Generation Me, I always thought everyone thought they were the best.
Here’s to:
Me—for being pretty awesome
You—being not bad yourself

We should be the Consumer Generation.
I am pretty good, aren't I?
Julie—
It’s true. After me (of course) you just might be the greatest person ever.
