Keep It Real

With only one real weekday left until I have to once again become a professional, working adult, how about we have one more day of foolishness and talk about the Jonas Brothers.

I mentioned in my 2009 year in review questionnaire that the Jonas Brothers were the best musical discovery of 2009, and you know what, I still stand behind that.

So how did this all start, you might be thinking, let me tell you.

A few months ago, on a lazy Saturday afternoon, I sat down to watch a lame movie that was showing on Family Channel. After the movie was finished, I didn't change the channel right away, and was introduced to a show called Jonas. As you probably guessed, it turned into a tv show staring the Jonas Brothers. It seemed to be an updated version of The Monkees, and actually had a few laughs in it. Strangely, even a few days later, I couldn't seem to get this song out of my mind. A week later, I found myself tuning in to catch another episode of Jonas.

At the time all I really knew about the Jonas Brothers was there was Old Jonas, the one who had hair like a girl, and, uhmm, the other one. I knew they were in Camp Rock, a sub par (I still think that.) version of High School Musical. But I really had no idea about who they were, or any of the music they sang.

After a few months of hit and miss watching of Jonas, I really started to get into the funny little show. The band seemed to be growing on me, and I after awhile, I didn't even really mind Joe's straightened hair. So right before Christmas, I decided to check into the music the Jonas Brothers were putting out.

To my surprise, it wasn't that bad. In fact, pretty good. I was shocked to find more than just a boy band. Guys, albeit young, who wrote their own songs and played their own instruments.I had emo bands on my ipod who were not as talented as this "boy band."

Okay. Don't get me wrong. The music isn't mind blowing. It is mostly still high school pop. But strangely YSA dating still seemed a lot like what they were singing about, and I found I could relate. (It was the line, 'Next time I see you I'm giving you a high five' that I seriously laugh over for a good long time. Someone once dumped me via high five. But, hey, that's a story for later.)

So take a listen, you might just like them. Let's not forget that The Beatles started off as a boy band, essentially. Just give them some time, and they might end up on your ipod.

Here are two of my favourite songs. They are at least on par with Love Me Do.

Besides, it doesn't hurt that I have a tiny, Zac Efron-esque crush on Joe Jonas. But then again, it might just be the hair. Take a look, Joe, Zac, and strangely this, which is plastered to my bedroom wall.

Fear not. I am at no time soon (although one day it might be time) planning on taking down my Beatles posters and replacing them with the Jonas Brothers. I have not turned into a JoHo (or whatever their fans call themselves. Although, I though JoHo was pretty funny.) I simply think that they aren't that bad for a casual listen. (There is a 80% chance they won't make it on to my 2010 yearly cd....okay, better make that 50%.)

Thanks for not judging me...well, at least too harshly.

As Always,

Hey! I didn't know that I knew Lovebug! I used to hear it all the time in the pool at the University and I really liked it. Maybe these Jonas boys aren't half bad...

Denise - I"m glad to know that i'm not the only one who has been sucked into the Jonas show. It is pretty cute! And I'm starting to like some of their songs too! "Lovebug" is probably at the top...and "When You Look Me in the Eyes", but I think that's an older song. I don't know if I would ever buy an entire CD but they're growing on me!
