Things Yet To Come

“There is a time of year in New York, even before the first leaf falls, you can feel the seasons click. The air is crisp, summer is gone and for the first night in a long time you need a blanket on your bed.”

It might just be a line from a TV show, but this year, I felt the seasons click. Somehow we made it all the way to October without even blinking an eye. Summer is definitely over, not only apparent in the air, but in everyone’s attitude as well. Life is back in full swing. There seems to be always something to do and always somewhere to go, but I guess it is good, for now.

Anyone who watches Jeopardy with Jenny knows how much she dislikes the stories the players tell when they introduce themselves early on in the game. And to be fair to her, most of them are pretty lame. However, a few weeks ago one of the players mentioned something that really peaked my interest.

You might not know it, but November is National Novel Writing Month. Essentially, participants have thirty days to write a 50,000 word novel. The organizers of this endeavor say the best way to write a novel is to just start, and this “contest” is more about quantity rather than quality.

“The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly. Make no mistake: You will be writing a lot of crap. And that's a good thing. By forcing yourself to write so intensely, you are giving yourself permission to make mistakes. To forgo the endless tweaking and editing and just create. To build without tearing down.”

You don’t really win anything other than a hardy congratulations and a certificate which is e-mailed to you, but I figure why not give it a go.

So what if I have two blogs I maintain, an active social life, a full time job search underway… it really only comes down to a little over 1,700 words a day. I am spending the next month combing my brain for an excellent plot and writing as detailed outline as I can get. Fingers crossed, this might actually turn out to be fun!

So...Join in, in the fun! (Isn’t that from some lame Canadian TV show that taught you how to make puppets? Subsequently, for my brother especially, I have been trying to find anyone, internet included, that remembers, “Do you have a question for Computer Man?” I am beginning to think we made the whole thing up.)

But here is a gem from yesteryear just for you!

Until next time.

As Always,

I can't stand the lame stories they tell and I insist we change the channel for that part.

Thanks so much for posting the Friendly Giant - I was telling someone about him the other day and couldn't remember what the show was called. Hooray for 80s kids shows!

I love that line from that T.V show. I just try not to tell very many people that I watch it... It is my secret little indulgents. I think I have seen all of them...I do watch tv for a living.
